The Death Card (tarot card) when received is a card that represents the death of one aspect of life, and the beginning of another. For Sworn In, this is just the beginning, and the bands first full-length is finally here. After several months of waiting, Sworn In is ready to take that next step forward with The Death Card.

There are a handful of words I could use to describe The Death Card; eerie, emotional, dark, powerful, hypnotic, all these terms noticeably have no positive vibe to them. This album tells the story of a man, or a character who is slowly losing his mind, his emotions, physical human characteristics, and is constantly contemplating death in each song (and eventually ending in death on the final two songs). Lyrically this album stays consistent with those thoughts and amazingly tells that story song after song. The title track, “XIII” gives a precursor to the album, which puts the entire record on a constant ever-descending loop. Sworn In might not be the band you want to listen to if your looking for metal love songs. Be ready for some powerful vocals from Tyler Dennen that will make you uncomfortable, awestruck and pissed off all at the same time. I got the same feeling of amazement and discomfort from the first time I listened to Slipknot’s “Iowa”, as I did with The Death Card. Corey Taylor and Tyler Dennen are clearly two different vocalists with entirely different styles, but I think fans of Slipknot would be surprised with what Sworn In has to offer.

Musically the album stays consistent with the playing style, riffs and heaviness. Each song is written with a different structure and different patterns, and seems to have a common theme of mixing up between speeding up & speeding down. The flow of the album fits right along side with the lyrics and really tells a dark story. Old fans can really see how Sworn In has grown since their previous EP’s in all aspects, but above all the music has matured a lot. Some may find the breakdowns and riffs are too similar and that could take away from the uniqueness of their sound. I find the music and riffs to be powerful and creative, but I definitely see room for growth, which isn’t a problem since this is their first full-length album.

Despite Sworn In’s consistent fan base growth over these past few months, I still see their market and audience hard too reach because not everybody is into music this dark and troubling. However I’m sure people could say the same thing about bands like Slipknot, Korn and Emmure when they first started, and everybody can see how far those acts have come. We’ll all have to wait and see how The Death Card takes off.

Sworn In has now made their mark in the world with The Death Card, and I highly recommend it for fans of Slipknot, Emmure and Bring Me The Horizon. Check out their music videos for “Snake Eyes” and “Hypocrisy”

Full disclosure; I showed up late and missed the first few bands.

When I finally arrived, For All Those Sleeping were in the middle of their set. I walked around and checked out merch for a bit. To be honest, I didn’t watch the next two bands, IWABO or CTC, for obvious reasons. Stray From The Path finally took the stage and got the crowd going with their new single, Badge and A Bullet. Which is very Rage Against The Machine influenced, if you ask me. Before they played, I made a comment to their guitarist Tom about dedicating their song iMember to CTC and FATS, which he thought was hilarious but they didn’t play the song unfortunately.

Up next was the legendary hardcore band, Terror. Scott Vogel, the vocalist, called for many stage dives, which the crowd happily obliged to. I was impressed that an actual hardcore band, let alone Terror, were playing this tour; I guess they were high up on the bill so they didn’t care who they played with.

Veil of Maya, who I have seen many times, were up next. The crowd noticeably dwindled down for them but I’m sure that the kids that left were the ones with the trendy Keepers of The Faith hoodies.

Cardona, a local GA metal band that played downstairs in the venue, were kicking butt as they headlined the local stage that night. After them, I walked back upstairs to see Chelsea Grin. Alex’s vocals actually sounded really good compared to when I saw then on their headliner last year. The newer material was awesome; Jason’s influence has definitely made the band step it up musically.

The lights go out. Paul Engemann’sPush It To The Limit" is blaring over the PA. Every Time I Die walk on stage; chaos ensues. Buffalo, NY’s finest open their set with We’rewolf from “The Big Dirty” and the crowd goes nuts. The band convinced the venue to allow stage diving that night, which made the show so much better. The band played 23 songs, 12 of which were all from albums ranging from “Gutter Phenomenon” to their latest release, “Ex-Lives”. After the first 12 songs, they walked off stage for a short intermission and then returned to play their 2003 release, “Hot Damn!”, front to back. Nothing more needs to be said.

Protest The Hero is pleased to announce the completion of their new studio album. The album is the long-awaited follow-up to 2011’s, Scurrilous (Vagrant). Since completing their ground breaking Indiegogo campaign, the progressive metal stalwarts also announce that they have licensed the album to series of worldwide partners who will help distribute and market it to both traditional stores alongside digital service providers, thus making the new record available on a world wide scale in preparation for its fall, 2013 release.

Protest The Hero and Razor & Tie will join forces for the United States, whilethe album will be released in Canada through SONY Music and in the rest of the word via Spinefarm

The forthcoming, soon-to-be named release will be supported by extensive global touring that will stretch well into 2014.
